Dilla Lives Through Floyd

Last night I made my return to STANDARD TUESDAY PRESENTS after a two week break from action (shouts to SHUB, DRASTIK, and RAY RAY). I made the 9 hour drive back to Ottawa from my hometown of Timmins to make sure I didn’t miss this night! Last week I got a request from my man FLOYDY to host his unofficial-official annual birthday jam.

Floyd missed his opportunity to host this year’s  DILLA LIVES party so I helped out by blessing the the STANDARD’S overhead sound system with ALL THINGS DILLA. Dilla wax, Dilla samples, Dilla collabos and on and on. This was Floyd’s only request for the night along with another I refrain from mentioning. Bottom line is I hit him with the Yancey while he got loose with some of his oldest pals.

Last night gave some good friends of mine the chance to stop by and take a peak at my battle scar before I have the Frankenstein staples taken out. My ear is basically brand new now and I’m ready for 60 more years of music! I’ll admit I had fun getting the reactions I did from peeps who caught the gangster image of the scar.

I wanted to take more pics of the night but got busy droppin’ heavy chunes for everyone that dropped by. Shouts out go to THE BOOMBOX DREAM, SKOSER CLOTHING, FLIGHT DISTANCE, JON DECK, the BABYLON NIGHTCLUB staff, BLAIR SMITH, and everyone else that caught a glimpse of the night.

The Standard Tavern staff girls were also on hand knitting for a good cause. Cindy (the redhead) is knitting to raise money. Please stop by and ask her questions to find out how to get involved!I’ve got some great ideas lined up for the next few months for STANDARD TUESDAY. Can’t wait to share them. Cheers.

Build Me Up

This coming Tuesday, THE STANDARD LUXURY TAVERN is proud to host a very important fundraiser to help raise money to build classrooms at the KATOSI PRIMARY SCHOOL in NSANJA, UGANDA.

The idea for the fundraising event was birthed by ALEXANDRA LAMARCHE, whose ultimate goal is to raise $10 000 through a series of fundraising events, which is needed to build 4 adequate classrooms to the primary school. Aly’s drive to help the community came after she spent time volunteering and working in the NSANJA, UGANDA region in 2009.

Her experience there made it clear that the school is too small and doesn’t provide adequate shelter. The learning space is not able to accommodate the number of students in demand for education, and is often unable to handle rainy weather. The money raised will help expand the size of the school, and provide proper protection from the rain — allowing classes to continue in spite of bad weather.

Through her efforts, Aly is attempting to provide a safe, comfortable, inspiring environment for the youth of Nsanja to learn and develop their education. This is just the sort of cause the The Standard Luxury Tavern and DJ ACRO are proud to be involved in. When Aly came to me with the idea of a fundraiser, I was quick to suggest using STANDARD TUESDAY as the venue. I am excited to be a part of this project and will do my best to help Aly reach her goal.

Tickets for the event are being pre-sold at Milk Shop and by Aly for $8, which includes entry into a GRAND PRIZE DRAW. Prizes have been donated by several local retail businesses and restaurants including MILK, NORML CLOTHING, THE STANDARD TAVERN, and many more (see full list of sponsors below). People opting to not buy a ticket can make a $5 donation at the door on the night of the event. The Standard Tavern will be playing a big part by donating a portion of sales from the following drink orders back to the cause: LABATT 50, VODKA BAR RAIL, and BURT REYNOLDS SHOTS.

PAUL MASCARO of SKOSER CLOTHING will be on hand selling select tees and merchandise, including the recent DJ ACRO x SKOSER collabo T. All proceeds from sales of SKOSER clothing at the event will be donated to the cause. Be sure to grab your ACRO T that night!

Join us Tuesday November 15 from 9pm onward, as STANDARD TUESDAY PRESENTS: BUILD ME UP — a fundraiser to build classrooms at the KATOSI PRIMARY SCHOOL in UGANADA.

Get your advance tickets at Milk Shop (234 Dalhousie Street, Ottawa) or donate at the door.

Build Me Up thanks the following businesses for their support and donations:

THE STANDARD LUXURY TAVERN x MILK SHOP x NORML CLOTHING x FALL DOWN GALLERY x SKOSER CLOTHING x THE ROYAL OAK x LA COUPE COURANTE x MITRA’S HAIR DESIGN x STARBUCKS x ELGIN STREET SPORTS

All Things Classic London Edition

Friends, ALL THINGS CLASSIC monthly returns tonight after a 1 month hiatus during which a hectic whirlwind of events took place in the life of DJ ACRO. In September, following my girlfriend Sarah’s birthday, we travelled to London, England together for the first time. I had never been overseas before and this is something I’ve always wanted to do since learning of my family heritage at a young age. My Father’s family is from various parts of England and immigrated to Canada in the early 20th century. This trip was a 1 year anniversary gift from my girlfriend, one of the best gifts I’ve ever gotten.

We arrived in England and took the 1 hour train into London and began our foot trip to the room we rented in a condo at the former Arsenal Football Club Stadium. The Stadium had been converted into a large upscale condo complex and the pitch was converted into a stunning walk through garden with a beautiful night scenery. The second night we were there, we could hear the roar of the 40 some thousand fans cheering from the new Arsenal Stadium 2 blocks away. Our hosts, whom rent a room in their condo to travellers, were extremely gracious, and helping people. If any of you reading this are planning a trip to London. The accommodations were definitely one of the highlights of the trip.

The rest of the week was spent touring the city, Sarah had lived there in previous years and knew the city inside and out. She was a great tour guide to have for my first overseas experience. After hitting several sneaker shops on different days, I noticed some flyers for an ERIC SERMON show at one of the city’s clubs. He was holding down a DJ SET at The East Village Club on the Thursday of that week.

That day I headed out to buy records for tonight’s All THINGS CLASSIC LONDONEDITION. EDITION. I ended up at RECKLESS RECORDS (30 Berwick St) in the SOHO DISTRICT of LONDON. I was determined to buy as much Vinyl as I could carry back on the plane. I chose carefully and picked up a good 15 or 16 pieces. Most of what I bought included several LP’s and 12″‘s that weren’t exactly rare, but were felt to be must have’s in my collection. With a great hand-picking of LP’s and singles, I’m happy with how tonight’s ALL VINYL MONTHLY will sound. Classic Hip Hip on wax including a copy of EPMD’s  ”BUSINESS NEVER PERSONAL” LP.

That night I headed to the club to catch ERIC SERMON who the crowd really loved. I ran into the gentleman from RECKLESS RECORDS (whom sold me my vinyl) and he was gracious enough to snap this shot of me with one of my all time favourite Hip Hop icons. You can check out RECKLESS RECORDS at www.reckless.co.uk

Tonight’s ALL THINGS CLASSIC LONDON EDITION will feature the sounds of A TRIBE CALLED QUEST/KRS ONE/THE FUGEES/THE BEASTIE BOYS/ FU SCHNIKENS and a host of other important 90′s New York hip hop heads, ALL ON WAX. There’s even some out of staters making an appearance including Mystikal and a  few other ‘coasters’.

The rest of the trip was amazing. We touched foot on region where my family is from, most notably my 91 year old great aunt, whom I hope enjoys her gifts of all Kent region products. I also especially enjoyed the American Style BBQ we were privileged to enjoy for free on 2 nights curtesy of BODINE’S SMOKEHOUSE. You’ve never eaten a rib like these guys make. Seriously I’m challenging anyone to beat these ribs. Thanks again to Andre and Lerke for the hospitality.

So wrapping things up, we arrived home on September 26th. The other 4 weeks since went something like this; I had my appendix removed, I  became an uncle, I placed 3rd place at the Red Bull Ottawa Three3tyle Competition, I started a new job, and I returned to school for the first time in 7 years. Phew! I think that covers it. Ask me questions tonight in person on any of the events above and I’ll tell you all about it! See you then!

Special Thanks go out to DJ DRASTIK AND DJ ILLO for holding me down during my trip and for pushing me to enter the Red Bull Three3tyle following my trip to the hospital!

ALL THINGS CLASSIC LONDON EDITION featuring a mix of ALL VINYL pieces in my recent trip to LONDON ENGLAND. Starts at 10pm.

$5 Martinis x $4 jagrebombs x $4 wings x $2 mini burgers x no cover

Ottawa Redbull Three3tyle 2011

It’s finally here! Red Bull’s 2011 Three3tyle international DJ competition has touched down in Ottawa and goes off inside RITUAL NIGHTCLUB tomorrow night Sat October 15th). The competition pits me against 7 other local DJ’s (one from Toronto) in an effort to claim the city’s title, and ultimately advance to the nationals in Toronto next month. The winner reps Canada at the World Finals in Vancouver in December.

After witnessing one of my good homies DJ DRASTIK take the nationals last year and eat the competition at the worlds (placing 3rd overall) I was determined that this would be a scene I wanted to be involved with.

I’ve been anticipating this year’s event to see what I can bring to the table. All the participants are well known for their work in Ottawa. At the top of that list is KID SL, a former multiple Canadian DMC title holder, and the current Ottawa Red Bull Three3tyle champion from 2009 (the competition was held in Kingston, ON last year). The process for prepping tomorrow night’s 15 minute SET was gruelling and challenging and put me to the test. Needing a minimum of 3 different genres of music, I had a lot of fun reaching into several different worlds of sound when organizing my set.

With 8 competitors, the event will kick off at 10 PM sharp, running straight through for 2 hours until midnight. Each DJ will be drawing names before the event to get their time slot, it’s important to get there by 10pm in order to catch all the action. Following the event SPECIAL GUEST JUDGES TEAM CANADA (Eh Team DJ’S) will cap off the night with there usual dance floor killings. The Team Canada duo are two of my favourite DJ’s and I am very excited for them to hear me for the first time. The other DJ’s filling the panel are fellow Team Canada cohort DJ ILLO (EH TEAM, STYLUSTS) and JON DECK (Higher Ground/Babylon).

With 8 DJ’s, Team Canada, and several other major music heads in attendance, tomorrow nights event will surely be a must see party. Red Bull always throws a great event, with lots of lights, effects, and big budget feel. No matter what happens, I am sure that this will be one of best experiences I’ve had DJ’ng to date. I can’t wait to see how this all unfolds. Now excuse me while I go apply my war paint. GET EM

Skate Night October

TOP OF THE WORLD’s monthly SKATE NIGHT returns to BABYLON NIGHTCLUB this Weds October 5th with the SPINNING WHEEL OF SKATE. Ottawa’s only monthly INDOOR SKATE EVENT is fresh off a successful August edition, where SKATE NIGHT raised more than $1900 to build a skate park in New Liskeard, Ontario. The fundraiser came to light following the tragic death of local skateboarding advocate and friend Carter Antilla’s brother, who passed away in a recent accident. (copy and paste the link below for recent article in the Ottawa Citizen newspaper)

SKATE NIGHT is a unique monthly event that allows some of Ottawa’s local skaters to flex their muscles in different indoor competitions from games of S.K.A.T.E to rail jams, to highest olly, to this month’s anticipated SPINNING WHEEL OF SKATE. The Spinning Wheel of Skate is simply a giant gameshow type wheel containing several difficult tricks that skaters, once they’ve spun the wheel, must land in order to move through the rounds and claim the title.

BABYLON NIGHTCLUB has played gracious host to this monthly event, converting the bar into a flat land battle ground that has been railed off to the crowd. It is a great atmosphere to witness some of the local pro’s, and those trying to make a name, do their thing. BABYLON has been a staple in Ottawa’s nightlife for many years and is the perfect environment for the skate community to come together for drinks, and entertainment. As TOP OF THE WORLD’S and SKATE NIGHT’S RESIDENT DJ, I pride myself on prepping a variety of music ranging from HIP HOP, REGGAE, PUNK, SKA, ROCK and keep an open format for anything anyone wants to hear.

This month will also see the return of SKOSER CLOTHING founder PAUL MASCARO who will be selling his SKOSER MERCH T’S that raise money for CANCER AWARENESS. His “Shirts For A Cure” campaign is rapidly spreading across the music and fundraising scene in Ottawa, as he is never shy to involve himself with any event. Every shirt sold will see a donation to the Cancer Society. Pick one up!

The night will also feature Ottawa’s own Robbie Lariviere of FALL DOWN GALLERY, who will be painting a live art piece from scratch to auction off at the end of the night. Prior to SKATE NIGHT be sure to head down to the FALL DOWN GALLERY at 288 Bank Street (two blocks from Babylon Nightclub) for the 9-11 pm pre-party. This shop is a dedicated institute to the art, skate, and music scene and is always playing host to warm-up events for BABYLON’S nights.

SKATE NIGHT’s doors open at 11pm with warm-ups until rounds begin at midnight. Cover is $3, drinks are cheap, and the scene is hot! Come out and support your local skate scene while taking in the SPINNING WHEEL OF SKATE.

*Go to my homepage and click on the poster to see the Facebook event page.

SKATE NIGHT is brought to you by:

NIXON x DJ ACRO

I am extremely proud to announce that the good people at TOP OF THE WORLD have connected me with one of the biggest global retailers of fine accessories and lifestyle on the planet . NIXON has gone ahead and graced me with several accessory items free of charge to help me along my musical path. When the announcement came early last week that there would be some potential needed items coming my way from NIXON, I never thought it would lead to the package of luxury goods that arrived via Purolator earlier this afternoon.

When I opened the box it contained several high fashion items including the RUBBER PLAYER GOLD n BLACK WATCH, several T-SHIRTS, THE NIXON MASTER BLASTER DJ HEAPHONES, HAT, and stickers and decals galore. We’re talking hundreds in fresh gear. As I drove home after copping my new package at TOP, I had my girlfriend crack open the box and display what had come my way. The watch was an absolute favourite as the heavy ALL BLACK AND GOLD design added maturity and quality to my persona. The t’s are very crisp and are among some of the best fitting garments I own.

The MASTER BLASTER SERIES HEAPHONES are superior in feel and feature a removable wire, solid stylish leather hard cover carrying case, and rotating volume control on the left ear cup. These headphone scream durability and are already proving their long lasting stand against any DJ wear and tear. If I actually skateboarded these would more than likely drown out any outside noise on the street. At a higher end price, I suggest copping a pair of these if you can afford them as they are built to last the most rugged of heads.

Be sure to try and catch some of the many NIXON stickers and decals I will be throwing out to the crowd over the next while as they have provided me with stacks of media to bless your laptops, skateboards, desktops, street signs, or whatever objects you can reach at arms length.

I’d like to thank the whole unit at TOP OF THE WORLD and would also like to extend a special thanks to Thom and Brian at NIXON in Toronto for the the lovely gifts. I am looking forward to some future collabos!

Find these hot items and others at TOP OF THE WORLD 158 Rideau Street, Ottawa

Homeboy Sandman

Just throwing a quick easy blog about tonight’s STANDARD TUESDAY FEATURE: HOMEBOY SANDMAN. My homegirl and one of my biggest music critiques threw this name across my ears last Wednesday and I couldn’t help but notice how enthusiastic she was about me downloading his recently released single GET ON DOWN. When this girl gets excited about something it’s usually for a good reason, so in my efforts to track down his music I came across some previously released albums and features on iTunes and got to the gas station to buy a download card.

This guy immidiatly caught my attention with his off beat on beat flow and rapid fire raps. With some intense boom baps and imaginative rhymes, this cat didn’t take long to get notice by STONES THROW RECORDS who in the past few days has inked a deal with him. Hailing from QUEENS NY, Homeboy will be joining the left coast record label to add depth to it’s already versatile and storied true school lineup.  Cutting his teeth in the music business through New York’s radio waves, Homeboy adds a golden era rap sound to today’s market and appeal.

The most talked about album at the moment may be Watch The Throne (don’t worry after the release of the hard copy I will be doing this feature), but I’m giving Homeboy Sandman a plug tonight due to his work on previous releases NOURISMENT (2007), ACTUAL FACTUAL PTERODACTYL (2008), and THE GOOD SUN (2010), as well as a slew of his singles he’s been featured on.

So come through STANDARD TUESDAY PRESENTS: HOMEBOY SANDMAN for some solid new bars from the homey Sandman. You can also expect to hear lots of cuts from other STONES THROW artists. Starts at 10:00 feature after midnight.

Battle At The Barrics Returns

I’m really excited to announce that this coming Wednesday will see the return of the fevered BATTLE AT THE BARRICS INDOOR SKATEBOARDING COMPETITION at BABYLON NIGHTCLUB. After wrapping up the sessions following the winter months, BARRICS took a quick breather to re-evaluate it’s format to continue to provide a unique and coveted experience to the local skateboarding community. With the idea of throwing a MONTHLY EVENT as apposed to a weekly event, BARRICS will allow local skaters and shops the opportunity to bring a go big or go home approach to this one-night only extravaganza.

After careful thought to the delivery and design of the competition, theimaginative folks at TOP OF THE WORLD came up with a concept that will provide a competitive and welcoming atmosphere for skate lovers across the city. The nature of the theme is to pit the top shops in town against each other, provoking each shop to bring their best representatives. TOP x ANTIQUE x SLAYSH x EQ will have the chance to boast bragging rights as well as partake in a good ol’ fashioned team spirited BEER CHUG to lighten things up. Along with bragging rights, skaters and shops will be able to collect prizes for S.K.A.T.E x RAIL JAM x HIGH OLLIE categories.

Along with being Ottawa’s only indoor skate event, it also happens to be inside one of the most influential bar and nightclubs in the city. BABYLON NIGHTCLUB has been hosting and welcoming the skate community year in and year out with it’s vibrant music, art, and fashion scene. Being able to grab a drink at the bar while your favorite skaters throw down 2 feet in front of you sounds like a great way to spend a summery Wednesday night no? Of course yours truly will be providing the musical background for the evening as I begin to widen my array of skate anthems with everything from SKA to ROCK to HIP HOP x PUNK and everything between.Don’t miss this newly formatted monthly event coming this WEDNESDAY AUGUST 3rd as TOP OF THE WORLD PRESENTS: BATTLE AT THE BARRICS: SHOP BATTLE. Doors open at 11pm. $3 cover.
